ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL/ANGLICAN CHURCH MT. RAINIER, MD

FROM THE RECTOR
(CANON DANIEL DARKO)

“COMPASSION”

A compassionate person is one who empathizes with his soul and acts from the heart.

In the current economic crisis, which is making life unbearable for millions of Americans, the Gospel of
Jesus Christ challenges us to help those at the margins of life. Every human being needs shelter, food, medical care
and a decent job that would enable him or her to live a dignified life in the true image of God. In addition,
everybody needs social services coupled with spiritual nourishment, without which life is not worth living.

We read about the miraculous feeding by Jesus in the Gospels as parallel to our spiritual food in the
sacraments.

In any event, we cannot “spiritualize” the needs of physically hurting people. This is why we must share
with others our material prosperity so that our blessings may become a blessing to others.

The spiritual satisfaction that comes from sharing life and love is the fullness and joy that always come to
those who give whatever they have to whoever needs their help.

There is so much joy and blessing through selfless and self-sacrificing devotion to others. Compassion for
others enhances our spiritual growth.

Holy Scripture says, “Cast your bread upon the waters, and in many years, it will come back to you.” A
compassionate person gives a higher priority to the physical and spiritual needs of others. “Then the
righteous will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father.” (Matthew 13:43)
